Semi-Quantitative Estimations of Concrete Properties Based on Micropore Structure

by Hiroshi Hashida

This paper presents semi-quantitative estimations of concrete properties - compressive strength, carbonation and drying shrinkage, based on the micropore structure. While the compressive strength of normal concrete depends on the volume of capillary pores with 5 to 0.05μm in diameter, especially on the pores contained at the transition zone, the high strength concrete depends on the total volume of capillary pores with 5 to 0.004μm in diameter. The carbonation rate depends on the volume of capillary pores with lager diameter than 0.05 or 0.1μm regardless of water-cement ratio. The drying shrinkage is approximately explained by pore humidity, water content and elastic modulus of concrete. To strengthen concrete by changing the pore structure not always improves the carbonation resistance. The drying shrinkage may be estimated from an effective cement paste which is subtracted unhydrated cement from cement paste, the combined water and the compressive strength.
